字彙筆記 Week 4

Today's various words:

1.syn-, sym- :together

e.g:
sympathatic (adj.) caring and feeling sorry about someone's problems

synchronize (v.)  to happen at exactly the same time, or to arrange for two or more actions to happen at exactly the same time

synapse (adj.) the place where nerve cells meet, especially in the brain

symmetry (n.) the quality of being symmetrical

symposium (n.) a formal meeting in which people who know a lot about a particular subject have discussions about it



2.-itis:denote inflammation of an organ

e.g:
gastritis (n.)  an illness which makes the inside of your stomach become swollen, so that you feel a burning pain

arthritis (n.) a disease that causes the joints of your body to become swollen and very painful

sinusitis (n.) a condition in which your sinuses swell up and become painful

3.bi-:two 

e.g:
bilingual (adj.) written or spoken in two languages

binocular (n.)  an optical device, providing good depth effect, for use with both eyes, consisting of two small telescopes fitted together side by side, each telescope having two prisms between the eyepiece and objective for erecting the image.

bisexual (adj.) sexually attracted to both men and women

4.-cide:kill

e.g:
pesticide (n.) a chemical substance used to kill insects and small animals that destroy crops 

suicide (n.) the act of killing yourself

genocide (n.)  the deliberate murder of a whole group or race of people (like ethnic cleasing)
